Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has acknowledged the strong engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has been instrumental in facilitating Sri Lanka’s recovery from the recent economic crisis.

Central Bank Governor Weerasinghe noted the partnership with the IMF has helped lay the groundwork for strong macroeconomic fundamentals, essential for ensuring stability and sustained growth.

He made these remarks while welcoming Dr. Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Dr. Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the Asia and Pacific Department (IMF) who arrived in the island yesterday.

Meanwhile, IMF senior officials are scheduled to attend today’s milestone conference on ‘𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚’𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲: 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞’, which is jointly hosted by the CBSL, the Ministry of Finance, and the IMF.

The visit of Dr. Gita Gopinath is particularly significant as it marks the first by a serving First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF in two decades, and comes as Sri Lanka and the IMF celebrate 75 years of engagement—a partnership that began with the inception of the CBSL, a statement by the Central Bank noted.

This historic moment marks a meaningful chapter in Sri Lanka’s long-standing partnership with the IMF, reaffirming a shared commitment to stability and supporting inclusive growth, the CBSL added further.
