The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (23) ordered police to submit a report on the progress of the investigation by July 7 regarding a complaint filed against a teacher suspected of sexually abusing a schoolgirl in Kotahena.
The case was taken up today before Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara.
During the hearing, officers of the North Colombo Children and Women’s Bureau, which is conducting the investigation, informed court that statements have been recorded from the mother of the deceased girl as well as from three other schoolgirls.
Additionally, police stated that a female teacher had also provided a statement as part of the inquiry.
It was further revealed that the DVR device connected to the CCTV cameras of the relevant school—required for the investigation—had been obtained by the Ministry of Public Administration for a separate investigation. Police informed court that steps are being taken to retrieve the device in order to proceed with further inquiries.
Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara, questioning why there had been a delay in retrieving the device, instructed police to obtain it and proceed with the necessary investigations.
The Magistrate then ordered the case to be recalled on July 7, and directed police to submit a progress report on the investigation.
