45 arrested by Navy for engaging in illegal fishing activities

The Sri Lanka Navy has apprehended 45 individuals involved in illegal fishing practices during a series of operations conducted between September 29 and October 7, 2025.
The arrested individuals are accused of using banned fishing nets and explosives, fishing without valid permits and engaging in fishing activities through unauthorized and harmful methods within local territorial waters.
During the operations, the Navy also seized 11 dinghies and two canoes.
The Navy stated the operations were conducted by the Northern and Eastern Naval Commands in seas off Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
The arrested suspects, along with the confiscated vessels and gear have been handed over to the respective Departments of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further action.
