The government has approved the introduction of a Time-Based Tariff Scheme for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) integrated with Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (RTSPV) installations, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said in a statement.
Accordingly, under the new scheme, electricity discharged from battery storage systems during the night-peak period (6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.) will be purchased by the CEB at a rate of Rs. 45.80 per unit (kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The CEB said this is a historic step to accelerate Sri Lanka’s transition to a cleaner and smarter energy system.
The initiative aims to encourage solar power producers to install battery energy storage systems, allowing them to store surplus electricity generated during the day and release it to the national grid during the evening peak hours; from 6.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., the CEB added.
The new scheme will not only improve grid stability but also significantly reduce the country’s dependence on costly fossil fuel-based power generation.
CEB officials noted that the new tariff mechanism marks a key milestone in promoting renewable energy integration, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable power sector in Sri Lanka.
