Resolution to appoint Select Committee to identify suitable electoral system for PC elections in Parliament

The resolution to appoint a Select Committee of Parliament to look into and report to Parliament on selecting the electoral system under which the Provincial Council Elections should be held and submit its proposals and recommendations has been presented in Parliament.

The resolution was presented by the Chief Government Whip Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The requirement for the appointment of a select committee arose since there are different viewpoints on the appropriate electoral system for holding the Provincial Council Elections.

According to the resolution, the Chair and Members of the Committee will be appointed by the Speaker and in terms of the provisions of Standing Order 101 of Parliament, the Committee will consist of more than 12 members.

The Committee will have the power to fix its quorum, summon any person to appear before it, to require any person to procure any document or record, to procure and receive all such evidence, written or oral, as the Committee may think it necessary and to obtain the services of specialists and experts in the relevant fields to assist the Committee.

The Committee is required to present its report to Parliament within a period of three months from the first meeting of the Committee or within such further period as Parliament may grant.
