The time is apt to amend outdated labour laws to reflect modern-day requirements while further safeguarding the rights of Sri Lankan workers, according to Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe.
Deputy Minister Jayasinghe said the government aims to introduce the necessary amendments to protect workers’ rights while strengthening the national economy and expanding the production sector.
The Deputy Minister made these remarks at a Western Province-level consultation held at the Ministry of Labour to obtain the views and proposals of trade unions on the proposed labour law amendments.
A Cabinet subcommittee chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Labour was appointed last year to prepare proposals to revise the laws and regulations administered by the Department of Labour in line with contemporary needs.
A series of provincial-level consultations is now being conducted to gather feedback on the proposals from trade unions, employers and members of the public.
The proposals were submitted to the National Labour Advisory Council on August 7, and the council is currently providing its views and recommendations on the proposed changes.
The government also plans to consider submissions from trade unions and other relevant stakeholders before preparing the final draft of the amendments.
Jayasinghe said that introducing new labour laws was also intended to expand the production economy and strengthen the country’s national economy.
He added that the final draft legislation would be prepared after taking into account the views and proposals of all relevant parties.
