Inmate shot dead while attempting to escape from Dumbara Prison
An inmate at the Pallekele Dumbara Prison has been shot dead by a prison officer after allegedly attempting to escape from the facility.
Prisons Commissioner and Media Spokesperson Senaka Palletenna said the prisoner had climbed onto a security post near the prison wall and attempted to seize the firearm of an officer on duty.
The officer subsequently opened fire at the prisoner in an attempt to prevent the escape, he said.
The prisoner succumbed to his gunshot injuries. He was being held at the Dumbara Prison on remand.
