Full-face helmet ban to be re-implemented on April 2

March 25, 2015   12:03 pm

Wearing full-face helmets by motorcyclists will be banned from April 2, Police spokesman said a short while ago. Earlier police announced the implementation of the ban but was later removed by Minister of Public Order.

Police on March 2 announced that wearing full-face helmets by motorcyclists will be banned from 21 March.

However on March 9 Minister John Amaratunga said that the ban on full-face helmets that was to be implemented from 21 March has been temporary removed.

Earlier too, police banned the use of full-face helmets only to later on temporary suspended the regulation due to several issues.

Then Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana had said that the regulation should be implemented as they witnessed many incidents where thieves were taking advantage of these helmets to carry out robberies.

According to the police, laws pertaining to motorcycle helmets are included in the special gazette notification No. 644/26 (January 11, 1991) while these regulations have been prepared by the relevant ministry under the clause 158 (2) and 237 of the Motor Traffic (Amendment) Act (No. 21 of 1981).
