Air Force sends aviation unit to South Sudan

The last element of 81 SLAF supporting crew members of the Sri Lanka Air Force’s second Aircraft deployment overseas have left the country from the Bandaranaike International Airport, the Defence Ministry said today (22).


With the departure of this team, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) completed dispatch of personnel and cargo for its Aviation Unit in South Sudan under the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).


The first element which comprised 2 Officers,10 Airmen and the three MI 17 aircraft were transported by AN 124 aircraft on 06 Jun 15. Five cargo flights carrying cargo for the deployment departed between 8th and 20th June.


This helicopter deployment will be tasked to carry out VIP transportation, transportation of food and equipment, domestic flying, para dropping and medical evacuation in the South Sudan, in support of the overall UN mandate for that nation.
