Fishing nets of a group of fishermen from Rameswaram were allegedly cut by Sri Lankan navy personnel while fishing near Katchatheevu, PTI reported.

The fishermen were fishing on seven boats when the incident occurred last night, Rameswaram Fishermen Organisation president Sagayam told reporters in Rameswaram today.

He said the Lankan naval personnel threatened the fishermen not to fish in the area.

He urged the central and state governments to intervene and allow the fishermen to fish in their traditional areas in the Palk Bay.

On December 21, four fishermen from Rameswaram were taken into custody by Sri Lankan navy while fishing near Katchatheevu in the third instance of such action this month.
