Striking Uni. non-academic staff given ultimatum

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified all non-academic staff of state universities who are currently on strike to report to work tomorrow (Aug 05).

Those on probation and training will be considered as having vacated their posts if they fail to report to duties tomorrow, UGC Chairman Professor Mohan de Silva said in a statement. 

However, the spokesman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee K.L.D.G. Richmond says that the oppressive actions of the government cannot halt their trade union action. 

If the government proceeds to suppress workers and ignore their just demands, we would have to resort to stronger trade union action, he told Ada Derana.
