Speaker’s close relative engaged in illegal soil excavation?

A group of protesters alleged that a close relative of the Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jaysuriya, of taking part in illegal soil excavation activities in Rambutanwatha, Kotadeniyawa.


Locals in the area engaged in the demonstration over the fear of drought like conditions setting in, as a result of the mass excavation process.


During a visit made by Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake, he stated that the excavation process itself was an example of mass environmental destruction.


President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that legal action will be taken against the perpetrators engaged in illegal soil excavation activities, regardless of their positions.
