The Constitutional Council of Sri Lanka has recommended Supreme Court Judge Priyasad Depp for the position of Chief Justice, sources told Ada Derana.

The council, chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, convened today in order to reach a decision regarding the country’s next top judge.

The Chief Justice is appointed by the President with the nomination of the constitutional council.

Incumbent Chief Justice K. Sripavan will retire from service on February 28. A ceremonial farewell is to be held at the Supreme Court on the same day.

Sripavan took oaths as the 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka on 30th January, 2015.

Justice Priyasad Depp, a senior judge in the country, has previously served as Acting Chief Justice on numerous occasions.
