Six villages in the Palagala Divisional Secretariat area of Anuradhapura are constantly under duress by elephants who roam in search of water bodies.
The residents of Mirihampitiya, Kirindiwatte, Galkiriyama, Denneva and Uduruwa have reported that their residencies are under constant threat by elephants in the surrounding areas.
This unfortunate situation has arisen due to the prolonged drought that is plaguing the country. Wild elephants are prompted to roam into residential areas in search of water.
It has been reported that even though Wildlife officers keep elephants away from the village areas during the day, the animals return during the night in search of water.
The residents of the affected areas have requested the government officials to provide them with a solution to prevent the escalation of the Human-Elephant conflict.
