Following a potent 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sumatra, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) has issued a warning to all Sri Lankan coastal communities to stay on high alert.

According to a US geological survey, the earthquake hit at a depth of 35 kilometers, 73 kilometers west of Bengkulu at approximately 0308 GMT
The Assistant Director of the DMC has stated that the warning was only an alert and there is no need for evacuation following international reports that there is no threat of an impending tsunami.

The DMC has requested all coastal communities to remain vigilant of the developments of the situation.

Pradeep Kodippili the Assistant Director of the DMC has now confirmed that there is no foreseeable threat to Sri Lanka following extensive reports from foreign Disaster Management centers.
