Police officers used tear gas to disperse university students protesting against SAITM at Kollupitiya Junction.

Riot police resorted to using tear gas as the protesters hindered traffic movement and also attempted to pass through barricades blocking the road towards Galle Face Roundabout which was closed due to the protest.

Trident unions including the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) and the Inter University Bhikkhus’ Federation (IUBF) staged the protest in Colombo demanding that the government shut down SAITM.

Before the massive protest started marching towards the Presidential Secretariat this morning, the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued a stay order barring any university student activist from forcibly entering any public institutions during today’s protest.
