Expressway bus fares reduced by 10%

Bus fares for passengers on expressways will be slashed by 10% with effect from midnight today (Jan 04), Minister of Transport & Highways Bandula Gunawardena says.

The expressway bus fare revision comes a day after the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO) and Lanka IOC reduced the price of auto diesel by Rs. 15 per litre. Following the price cut, a litre of auto diesel is now priced at Rs. 405.

At the same time, the annual licence fee charged by the government for expressway buses, which was increased to Rs. 3.3 million due to the fuel price and bus fare hike, will be reduced to Rs. 1.296 million.

Minister Gunawardena mentioned this addressing a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (Jan 04).

Meanwhile, the semi-luxury bus service on the Galle Road between Colombo and Kataragama will be cancelled from today, the lawmaker said further.

Accordingly, these buses will hereafter operate as normal service buses, charging only Rs. 1,117 from the passengers instead of its semi-luxury fare of Rs. 1,541.
