The two-lane road that runs over the embankment of the Udawalawe Dam is temporarily closed starting 7:00 a.m. today (Dec.15), due to essential maintenance work.

According to Mahaweli Authority, the stretch of road will remain closed until January 15, under three phases.

From January 07 - 14, the stretch of road will once again be closed completely before reopening it for vehicular movement on January 15.

Safari jeeps and other vehicles except for heavy vehicles are allowed during the period the stretch of road remains open. However, safari jeeps are only permitted to travel between 5 a.m. - 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
