Phase one of Uma Oya project completed – Minister

Phase one of the Uma Oya project has been completed, with the first unit of the two-turbine hydro-project having been connected to the National Grid on Saturday (27 Jan.), Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijsekera revealed.

Taking to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the Minister revealed that the first unit turbine of 60MW, of the 120MW Uma Oya hydro-project was completed yesterday, despite the extended delays caused due to various factors.

“With the long delays due to the challenges of political protests against the project, covid pandemic & the financial crisis the project teams & officials have been able to successfully complete phase one”, the Minister said, adding that phase two of the project is expected to be completed by mid-February.
