Sri Lanka explores potential to increase Buddhist pilgrims to Pakistan

New Pakistani High Commissioner Major General (Retd.) Faheem Ul Aziz has called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees on Friday (March 15).

The new envoy thanked the Sri Lankan Prime Minister for his felicitations and best wishes sent to newly-elected Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

PM Gunawardena extended gratitude to Pakistan for supporting Sri Lanka at international forums and for extending training facilities to the members of the Sri Lankan armed forces.

He discussed the possibility of expanding bilateral ties in economic spheres, investments, tourism and industries.

High Commissioner Aziz said there is potential for increasing Buddhist pilgrims to Pakistan as sufficient infrastructure facilities have been established in places of pilgrimage such as Thakshila and Gandhara region.

MP Yadamini Gunawardena and Prime Minister’s Secretary Anura Dissanayake and Deputy High Commissioner Wajid Hassan Hashmi also took part in the discussion.
