The Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yoko Kamikawa has arrived in Sri Lanka on an official visit to discuss Sri Lanka’s debt and economic restructuring process.

During her two-day visit, the Japanese foreign minister is expected to meet high-level officials of the government, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

During a recent media briefing in Japan, the Japanese Foreign Minister reiterated Japan’s cooperation with Sri Lanka in the debt restructuring process.

The discussions between the Japanese Foreign Minister and the Sri Lankan government will focus on several areas, including the resumption of economic ties and development engagements, the restructuring of Sri Lankan debt and the economy and the progress on Japan funded investment projects in Sri Lanka.

Following discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa will be addressing a joint media briefing in this afternoon with his Sri Lankan counterpart.

Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing last week, the Japanese Foreign Minister explained the importance of her visit to Sri Lanka.

“Japan and both Sri Lanka and Nepal have established deep mutual trust based on many years of development cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. Through my visit, we will further strengthen our cooperation.”

“Specifically, first, in Sri Lanka, Japan will reiterate its cooperation with the Government of Sri Lanka, which is in the process of restructuring its debt. I will also confirm with Sri Lanka our collaboration on Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, Women, Peace and Security, and disarmament and non-proliferation”, she added.
