Nearly 10,000 army deserters granted legal discharge within two weeks

Nearly 10,000 army personnel who were absent for duty without obtaining leave (AWOL) have been temporarily discharged from their Regimental Centers during the ongoing general amnesty period, the Sri Lanka Army said.

The Sri Lanka Army had announced a general amnesty period of a month for Army personnel who have been absent without leave from 20 April to 20 May 2024.

As of the end of the first two weeks of this amnesty period, between 20 April and 04 May 2024, a total of 9,735 army personnel who were absent without leave since 31 December 2023 and earlier have been temporarily discharged from their Regimental Centers, it added.

Additionally, arrangements have been made for 35 personnel who are currently overseas and absent without leave to be legally discharged from the Army during this amnesty period, according to the Sri Lanka Army.
