Advisory issued for severe lightening: Heavy showers expected tomorrow

The Meteorology Department warns that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, Uva and North-central provinces and in Matale, Mullaitivu and Kurunegala districts today (9).

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers, the department said.

Thus, the general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

The general public is further requested to avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms and to also avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, boats etc. and to beware of fallen trees and power lines.

For emergency assistance, the public is requested to contact local disaster management authorities.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most provinces of the island after 2.00 p.m. on Friday (10).

In its weather forecast issued for tomorrow, the department mentioned that heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in North-central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Mullaitivu district.

Showers will occur at several places in Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam district during the morning too, according to the Met. Department.
