Foreigner linked to LPL franchise arrested at BIA over match-fixing

A Bangladeshi national connected to a Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise, who is under investigation in relation to allegations of match-fixing, has been detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. 

The suspect, who holds a British passport, has been arrested by the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigations Unit for the prevention of offences related to sports. 

The arrested suspect has been identified as Bangladeshi entrepreneur Tamim Rahman, who is one of the owners of the LPL franchise “Dambulla Thunders”. 

He has reportedly been detained at the airport due to a travel ban imposed on him in relation to an investigation being carried out against him by the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigations Unit.

He was later handed over to officers of the Special Investigations Unit, who are scheduled to produce him before the court.  

The suspect is accused of attempting to approach players for match-fixing. 


UPDATE (4.20 p.m.) - The Bangladeshi national connected to an LPL team, who was detained at the BIA over match-fixing allegations, has been remanded until May 31  by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
