More details revealed on shooting near school in Weligama

More details have been revealed regarding the shooting incident reported near the Batawala Pathegama Model Primary School in Weligama, Matara this morning (27).

The shooting had been carried out by two unidentified individuals who had arrived on a motorcycle while they had reportedly targeted a youth, who is a resident of Midigama police area. 

Sudesh Madhusanka, 30, a resident of Pitiduwa Road in Midigama, had brought his two children to the Pathegama Model Primary School in Batawala this morning (27) when the gunmen had opened fire at him before fleeing.

However, no casualties were reported from the shooting incident. 

The person who was the target of the shooting is said to be a member of the criminal gang of Nandun Chintaka alias ‘Harak Kata’ and he had been arrested in connection with shooting a person at Turkish Village of Midigama on January 20, 2022 and was out on bail.

Police suspect that the shooting may have been carried out using a pistol while police had also recovered a single empty bullet casing from the road where the shooting had taken place.

Several police teams and the Police Special Task Force (STF) are conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
