Amber advisory issued for strong winds and rough seas

An ‘Amber’ advisory has been issued by the Department of Meteorology for rough sea conditions and strong winds for sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Mullaitivu, Kankesanturai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

 

The advisory, issued at 10.30 a.m. today (05) will remain in effect until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow (06).

 

According to the Met. Department, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankesanturai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 60-70 kmph.

 

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph.

 

Meanwhile, the wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, while near shore sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle may experience surges as well, the Met. Department added.

 

Naval and fishing communities engaging in fishing and naval activities in the aforementioned sea areas have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard.
