Police have used tear gas to control the tense situation that has arisen at the Pallansena Open-Air Correctional Centre in Dalupotha, Negombo.

Meanwhile, the inmates are currently pelting stones at prison officers amid the unrest, Ada Derana Reporter said.

Steps have been taken to tighten security around the Pallansena Open-Air Correctional Centre in Dalupotha, Negombo, after a group of inmates staged a protest on the prison roof.

Police, the Police Special Task Force (STF), the Police Riot Control Unit, and the Sri Lanka Air Force have been deployed to maintain security and bring the situation under control.

The unrest reportedly began this morning (07) after a group of inmates climbed onto the roof of the prison and launched a protest.

Following the clashes at Negombo Prison last month, arrangements had been made to transfer a group of inmates from Negombo Prison to the Pallansena Open-Air Correctional Centre.

Meanwhile, the tense situation reported at New Magazine Prison last night (06) has been brought under control.

A total of 11 inmates were hospitalised after sustaining injuries during the unrest, and one of them later succumbed to his injuries.

A separate tense situation also occurred at Kuruwita Prison this morning (07), where two inmates were killed, and several others were hospitalised.

It has also been reported that a group of inmates caused damage to the prison hospital during the unrest.
