Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has won the men’s javelin throw at the Zurich Diamond League after producing a 92.07-metre effort in his final attempt earlier today (28).

The 23-year-old saved his best throw for the last round to secure another major victory in a breakthrough 2026 season.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third with 85.16m.

Tharanga’s winning throw was also his second effort beyond 92 metres this season. He threw a personal best of 92.62m in Rome on June 4.

Tharanga leaves it until the final round

Tharanga opened the competition with an 81.50m throw before improving to 88.23m in the second round.

He then recorded 89.90m in his third attempt, followed by 84.91m in the fourth. His fifth throw was a foul.

With the competition reaching its final round, Tharanga produced the throw that mattered most — 92.07m.

His full series was:

  • 81.50m
  • 88.23m
  • 89.90m
  • 84.91m
  • Foul
  • 92.07m

The final-round throw gave him a clear winning margin over Peters and confirmed another Diamond League victory.

Second 92-metre throw of the season

Tharanga’s performance in Zurich adds to what has already been an outstanding season.

His 92.62m throw in Rome remains his personal best and the leading mark he has produced in 2026. The Zurich effort came just 55 centimetres short of that distance.

Throwing beyond 92 metres twice in the same season is a significant achievement and underlines the consistency

Tharanga has developed during his first major breakthrough at the top level.

He has also recorded a number of strong results on the Diamond League circuit this year, including victories in Doha and Lausanne.

Commonwealth Games gold adds to his season

The Zurich victory comes after Tharanga also won the men’s javelin gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

His performances this year have quickly taken him from a promising young thrower to one of Sri Lanka’s leading athletes on the international stage.

The Rome performance was the biggest indication of his potential, but his results since then have shown that he can perform consistently rather than relying on one exceptional throw.

Tharanga’s emergence has also added another name to the growing list of major javelin throwers from South Asia.

India’s Neeraj Chopra is an Olympic champion and one of the biggest names in the event, while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem holds the Asian record of 92.97m after winning Olympic gold at Paris 2024.

Tharanga’s personal best of 92.62m has brought him within 35 centimetres of Nadeem’s Asian record.

With all three athletes competing at the highest level, the region now has a particularly strong presence in men’s javelin.

Tharanga qualifies for Diamond League Final

The Zurich victory has also secured Tharanga’s place in the Diamond League Final in Brussels, which will be held on September 4 and 5.

He goes into the final after a season that has included multiple Diamond League victories and his 92.62m personal best.

The final will provide another opportunity for the Sri Lankan to compete against the best javelin throwers in the world.
