The National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) says 81,929 people belonging to 25,647 families across 24 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in seven districts are facing difficulties in accessing drinking water due to the prevailing dry weather conditions in the country.

Senior Assistant Secretary of the NDRSC Prageeth Danansooriya said arrangements are being made to provide drinking water to the affected people in coordination with the NDRSC, District Secretariats and Divisional Secretariats.

He noted that the Monaragala and Batticaloa districts have been the most severely affected by the dry weather conditions. In addition, people in Ampara, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota and Ratnapura districts are also facing difficulties in obtaining drinking water.

He said the necessary funds to distribute drinking water have already been allocated to the respective District Secretaries to address the situation.

Danansooriya further said the situation could worsen in the coming days according to forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology, and that additional funds would be released to District Secretaries as required.

He also urged anyone facing difficulties in obtaining drinking water or other essential needs to immediately inform the relevant Grama Niladhari or Divisional Secretary.
