Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) earlier today (31), has been produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
MP Karunanayake was arrested by CIABOC today after appearing before the Commission to record a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation.
CIABOC launched an investigation based on an alleged incident in which three employees recruited for a special project of the National Lotteries Board were allegedly deployed for political activities, causing a financial loss to the government.
MP Karunanayake had previously been instructed to appear before the Commission to provide a statement but had failed to do so.
Following the development, CIABOC officers had visited his residence, but he was not at home at the time.
His lawyers had subsequently requested another date for him to provide a statement, citing arrangements related to his daughter’s wedding.
Accordingly, after appearing before CIABOC today in response to the notice, MP Ravi Karunanayake was arrested and subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
