The Court of Appeal has fixed for consideration on 15 May a writ petition filed seeking an order to hold elections for Sri Lanka Rugby.
The petition was filed by former national rugby player Waruna de Silva and was taken up for consideration today before a bench comprising Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohamed Lafar Tahir, and Justice Priyantha Fernando.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, President’s Counsel Faiszer Musthapha informed the bench that all necessary arrangements had been finalized to conduct Sri Lanka Rugby election on 25 January, in accordance with an agreement previously reached before the Colombo District Court.
However, he alleged that the election was abruptly suspended on that day following an order issued by the Director General of Sports, which he claimed constitute to contempt of court.
He further stated that this development has created complications concerning the nominations already submitted for the election.
Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena, representing the Attorney General, informed the bench that a related contempt of court case is also scheduled to be taken up on 15 May and requested that the current petition be considered on the same date.
Court also accepted the request and ordered that the petition be called on 15 May for further proceedings and confirmation of facts.
