Shakib Al Hasan makes history, achieves first-ever feat in T20 cricket

Bangladesh cricket legend Shakib Al Hasan achieved a historic milestone in T20 cricket during the 2025 Caribbean Premier League match at Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua, becoming the first player to complete the rare double of 500+ wickets and 7000+ runs in the format.
Playing for Antigua and Barbuda Falcons against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Shakib’s all-round performance of three wickets for 11 runs and a quick 25 runs helped secure a seven-wicket victory for his team.
Shakib’s three-wicket haul during the match took him to the exclusive 500-wicket club in T20 cricket, making him only the fifth bowler to reach this milestone. He joins the ranks of Rashid Khan, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, and Imran Tahir in this achievement.
The accomplishment is particularly significant as Shakib became the first left-arm spinner to reach 500 T20 wickets, surpassing Imad Wasim who has 376 wickets. His achievement stands out even more as he leads the 500-wicket club in runs scored with 7,574 runs. In the list of players with most runs in the 500-wicket club, Shakib leads with 7,574 runs, followed by Dwayne Bravo with 6,970 runs. Other members include Sunil Narine with 4,649 runs, Rashid Khan with 2,662 runs, and Imran Tahir with 377 runs.
Looking at players with most wickets in the 7000+ runs club, Shakib stands at the top with 502 wickets. Andre Russell follows with 487 wickets and 9,361 runs, while Kieron Pollard has 332 wickets and 13,981 runs. Ravi Bopara and Moeen Ali complete the list with 292 and 260 wickets respectively.
Shakib’s impact on international T20 cricket is equally impressive. He remains the only player to have scored over 2,500 runs and taken more than 100 wickets in T20 internationals. Before his retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup, he had accumulated 2,551 runs and 149 wickets in 129 T20 international matches for Bangladesh.
The record is even more remarkable considering that no other player has managed to combine 100 wickets with 1,000 runs in T20 internationals. This demonstrates Shakib’s exceptional all-round abilities in the shortest format of cricket. His performance in the CPL match, which earned him the Player of the Match award, showcased his continued excellence in T20 cricket.
The victory margin of seven wickets, with two balls remaining in the chase of 137 runs, highlighted the impact of his contribution with both bat and ball. The record indicates the growing evolution of T20 cricket, where players like Shakib have redefined all-round performances. With Andre Russell approaching similar milestone numbers, these achievements set new benchmarks for future cricketers in the T20 format.
