Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after internal bleeding from a rib cage injury he suffered during the third and final ODI against Australia at the SCG.

He took a brilliant catch of Alex Carey, but hurt his rib cage and was taken to the hospital.

‘Shreyas Iyer is in the ICU for a couple of days, as internal bleeding started and he had to be admitted. He will be under observation as there is a chance of infection due to bleeding,’ a source told PTI.

The BCCI medical staff made a decision to take him to the hospital, as fluctuation was seen in his vital parameters. ‘The team doctor and the physio rushed him to the nearby medical facility. He is fine now, but things could have been fatal. Iyer is a tough guy, and he will be fine soon,’ the source added.

Earlier, it was reported that Iyer would be out of action for three weeks, but the duration of his absence is likely to be longer.

‘He needs more time to recover due to internal bleeding, and it is difficult to set a definite timeline on his return to cricket,’ the source mentioned.

The 31-year-old will remain in the Sydney hospital for a week before returning to India.
