The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to consult the government once again regarding Sri Lanka Cricket’s request to reconsider Pakistan’s boycott of the marquee T20 World Cup match against India on February 15 in Colombo.

The Pakistan government had allowed the national team to participate in the T20 World Cup but barred it from playing against India, the tournament’s most commercially significant match for broadcasters and organisers. In response, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sent an email to PCB highlighting the financial and reputational losses that could result if the match does not take place, as the island nation co-hosts the tournament with India.

Pakistan begins its campaign against the Netherlands on Saturday, with matches scheduled across Colombo and Pallekele. A source familiar with the developments said, “Pakistan has always maintained close and friendly ties with Sri Lanka at both government and cricket levels. The email from their Board cannot be ignored.”

SLC President Shammi Silva personally contacted PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, emphasising the revenue losses in gate money, hospitality, and overall tournament image if Pakistan skips the India fixture. Naqvi reportedly assured Silva that he would consult the government and revert.

The source clarified that reports claiming Pakistan had rejected SLC’s request were incorrect, noting that Naqvi, who returned to the country recently, will bring the matter to the Prime Minister’s attention, and a decision is expected by Monday.

Reflecting on past support, the source added, “In November, when some Pakistani players sought to leave Pakistan mid-tour due to security concerns, the Sri Lankan government and Board insisted that the tour be completed, showcasing longstanding cooperation.”
