Yupun becomes first South Asian to finish 100m in less than 10 seconds

Sri Lanka sprinter Yupun Abeykoon won the Men’s 100m event at the Resisprint International 2022 in Switzerland today (July 03), finishing the race in just 9.96 seconds.

He became the first South Asian to register a time below 10 seconds in the 100m race. Abeykoon also recorded the third-fastest time by an Asian.

He renewed the national and South Asian record for the event of 10.6 seconds set in late May.

Earlier in the day, Abeykoon finished first in his heat with a time of 10.1 seconds to advance to the final.

Abeykoon is set to compete in the Men’s 100m at the World Athletic Championships scheduled to kick off on July 15 in Oregon in the United States, followed by the Commonwealth Games.
