A special medical team of the World Health Organization (WHO) specializing in leprosy is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka in March.

According to the Anti-Leprosy Campaign (ALC), the WHO will be helping the local health authorities to create a roadmap to eliminate leprosy from Sri Lanka over the next 10 years.

Speaking further, ALC Director Dr. Prasan Ranaweera said the number of leprosy patients found in Sri Lanka has significantly increased.

“Accordingly, we have already initiated a comprehensive program to eliminate leprosy from Sri Lanka. […] The World Health Organization has informed us it would send a team of specialist doctors here in March to assist this [initiative]. They will create a roadmap to eradicate leprosy within the next 10 years.”
