One injured in police fire during attempt to harm his own wife

One person has been injured and hospitalised when police opened fire while attempting to bring a drug-addicted person under control during a dispute in the Molligoda area of Wadduwa this afternoon (04).

The shooting incident has taken place in front of a hotel in the area, according to police.

The injured individual, identified as a drug addict, had allegedly inflicted serious injuries on his wife by slashing her neck with a piece of glass bottle, the police said.

Upon receiving information about the incident, a team of police officers had arrived at the scene.  Later, the police had fired into the air to bring the suspect under control, but had failed. 

The suspect, who sustained injuries in the police fire, has been admitted to Panadura Base Hospital for treatment, while his wife has also been hospitalized with critical injuries, Ada Derana reporter said.

The Panadura Police Crimes Unit is conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
