The increased Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship allowance, introduced under the 2026 Budget proposal, will be credited to students’ bank accounts starting tomorrow (10).
Chairman of the Lalith Athulathmudali Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund, retired judge Vijith Malalgoda stated that Rs. 10,000 for the month of January will be deposited accordingly.
The scholarship allowance, which previously stood at Rs. 7,500, has now been increased to Rs. 10,000.
Mahapola scholarship payments are jointly funded by the Treasury, the Lalith Athulathmudali Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Under the current arrangement, 48% of the allowance is covered by the Mahapola Trust Fund while the remaining 52% is borne by the government through the University Grants Commission.
Additionally, the Mahapola scholarship allowance has been revised twice between April 2025 and January 2026. Through two increases of Rs. 2,500 each, the allowance has been doubled from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 under the current government.
