The Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter has stated that the imprisoned Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero should be released.

The Mahanayake Thero made these remarks when a delegation of senior prison officials, including Commissioner of Prisons (Operations and Media) Senaka Palletenna, paid a courtesy call on him today (16) at the Asgiriya Maha Viharaya.

During the meeting, the Mahanayake Thero inquired whether there was a procedure in place to secure Gnanasara Thero’s release.

In response, the Commissioner of Prisons stated that no definitive decision had been made in this regard to date.

Subsequently, the Commissioner of Prisons paid a courtesy call on the Most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter.

During the meeting, the Malwathu Mahanayake Thero stated that if Buddhist monks are remanded or imprisoned over certain allegations, a separate facility should be established to accommodate them.

The Mahanayake Thero further noted that although the matter had been discussed previously, the discussions had concluded without a final decision.

The Mahanayake Thero emphasized the need to establish a separate facility for monks, where they could be treated appropriately and allowed to perform their religious practices without hindrance.
