The minor flood warning issued for the low-lying areas of the Nilwala River Basin has been extended for another 48 hours.

Accordingly, the Irrigation Department has announced that this warning will remain in effect until 6:00 PM on October 18.

This decision was reached following an analysis of water levels at river gauges, in the wake of heavy rainfall across the upper and middle catchment areas of the Nilwala River Basin.

The department states that there is a risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas within the Nilwala River's floodplain, specifically across the Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) of Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, and Matara.

Consequently, the Irrigation Department has advised residents in these areas, as well as motorists traveling through them, to remain highly vigilant.
