A man has been sentenced to a total of 54 years of rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty of raping his own underage daughter, following a case heard before the Gampaha High Court on October 29, 2026, the Police Media Division said.

The accused, who is the victim’s father, was found guilty on all three charges brought against him. The presiding High Court Judge imposed a sentence of 18 years of rigorous imprisonment on each charge, amounting to a total of 54 years.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 for each charge, totalling Rs. 150,000. In the event of non-payment, the accused will face an additional one-year term of imprisonment for each charge, amounting to a total of three years, said police.

Furthermore, the court ordered the accused to pay Rs. 200,000 in compensation to the victim. Failure to pay the compensation will result in an additional two-year term of imprisonment.

According to the Police Media Division, the suspect was arrested following an investigation conducted by the Bureau for the Prevention and Investigation of Child and Women Abuse into the rape of a girl under the age of 16 by her father. He was subsequently indicted before the High Court.

Meanwhile, separate legal proceedings had previously been conducted before the Panadura High Court against the victim’s mother’s paramour, who was accused of raping the same girl and selling her for money.

The accused faced two charges in connection with these offences. On June 24, 2024, the Panadura High Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment on each charge.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 on the first charge and Rs. 5,000 on the second charge. In the event of non-payment, the accused was ordered to serve one month of simple imprisonment for each charge, amounting to a total of two months, said police.

Additionally, the court ordered him to pay total compensation of Rs. 500,000 to the victim, calculated at Rs. 250,000 for each charge. Failure to pay the compensation will result in an additional 18 months of rigorous imprisonment for each charge, amounting to a total of three years.
