The postal service has been declared an essential service in a special gazette notification published on Monday (March 13).

The Secretary to the President, Saman Ekanayake issued the communiqué, on the directives of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, pursuant to the powers vested in the Head of State in terms of the Essential Public Services Act, No. 61 of 1979.

Thereby, the postal service is now considered essential to the life of the community and it is likely to be impeded or interrupted, the special gazette read.

Previously, on February 27, the Head of State placed his signature on a special gazette notification, declaring several services related to ports, airports and passenger transport services as essential services.
