Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an incident during the second Test against India at the SSC in Colombo.

Jayasuriya was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to the abuse of cricket equipment or ground equipment during an international match.

He has also been handed one demerit point, his first offence under the ICC Code of Conduct in a 24-month period.

The incident took place after Jayasuriya was dismissed with the final delivery of the day on Monday. While walking back to the pavilion, he struck the boundary wedges with his bat.

Jayasuriya admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, meaning no formal hearing was required.

The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.

Jayasuriya becomes the third player to be sanctioned in the SSC Test, following India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando.

Jaiswal and Fernando were sanctioned following an incident on the opening day of the Test. The incident occurred after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India’s first innings, when the two players exchanged words before their heads made contact.
