An open verdict has been returned following the post-mortem examination conducted into the suspicious death of renowned model Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana.

Police said the post-mortem examination found no external or internal injuries on the 45-year-old woman’s body. Samples have been sent to the Government Analyst for further forensic examination as investigations continue.

Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana was found dead on a bed at a house belonging to a businessman in Thumbowila, Piliyandala, yesterday (Aug. 31).

According to police investigations, Kumarapathirana had been in a romantic relationship with the businessman. Police said she had attended an event she organized in Battaramulla on August 30 and later arrived at the businessman’s residence in Piliyandala in the early hours of yesterday.

She subsequently went to sleep in a room at the residence.

At around 12:45 p.m., attempts were made to wake her, but she failed to respond. The 1990 Suwa Seriya ambulance service was then called, and medical personnel confirmed that she had died, according to police.

Meanwhile, the businessman had lodged a complaint with the Piliyandala Police after noticing a bloodstain on the bedsheet on which Chulpadmendra Kumarapathirana had been sleeping. Her mother had also lodged a complaint with the police.
Police said two complaints have therefore been received in connection with the death.

Following the reporting of the matter to the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court, Acting Magistrate Sunethra Perera inspected the scene and the body.

The post-mortem examination was conducted at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital by Judicial Medical Officer Dr. B.C.M. Rodrigo, on the orders of the court.

Further investigations are being conducted under the direction of Piliyandala Police Station OIC, Chief Inspector Chaminda Kulasinghe.
