Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is expected at some places today (16), as showers and thundershowers continue across several parts of the country, according to the Department Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces, with some locations likely to receive the heavier falls, the Met. Department noted.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Uva, Eastern and North Central provinces and in the Mullaitivu district after 1 p.m.

The prevailing weather conditions are associated with a low-level atmospheric disturbance that had been affecting Sri Lanka. However, the disturbance is now moving away from the island and its influence is expected to gradually decrease, the Met. Department added.

Despite the weakening influence of the system, the general public has been urged to remain cautious during thundershowers due to the possibility of temporary localized strong winds and lightning.

Authorities have also advised the public to take adequate precautions to minimize possible damage caused by strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
