A school principal in Galle has been arrested for allegedly attempting to obtain a bribe of Rs. 250,000 in connection with the admission of two children to the school.

The principal had initially allegedly demanded Rs. 300,000 for each child, amounting to Rs. 600,000 in total. The demand was later reduced to Rs. 300,000.

Of this amount, the principal allegedly accepted Rs. 150,000 to facilitate the admission of one child to Grade 1 in 2026.

He subsequently allegedly accepted a further Rs. 50,000 to facilitate the admission of the second child to Grade 8, after which arrangements were made for the child to be admitted to the school.

The principal is then alleged to have demanded an additional Rs. 250,000, reportedly warning that both children would be removed from the school if the money was not paid.

The arrest was made while the suspect was allegedly attempting to obtain the Rs. 250,000 demanded to prevent the children from being removed from the school.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court.
