Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka stated that there are no plans to request an increase in electricity tariffs for the upcoming quarter.

Speaking in Parliament today (11), the Minister said that higher-than-expected rainfall in recent times had enabled the authorities to manage electricity generation costs to a certain extent.

He stated that an increase in electricity tariffs is therefore not necessary for the upcoming quarter and that there are no plans to submit a request for a tariff increase.

The Minister further stated that the necessary measures have already been taken to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity during the first three months of next year, adding that the Ministry of Energy has taken the required steps in this regard.

“Because we received higher rainfall than expected, we were able to manage the cost of electricity generation to a certain extent. Accordingly, we do not intend to make any request for an increase in electricity tariffs for the upcoming quarter. Likewise, the Ministry of Energy has taken the necessary steps to ensure a continuous supply of electricity during the first three months of next year,” he said.
