Landslide red evacuation warnings remain in effect across 13 Divisional Secretariat divisions in six districts, as adverse weather conditions continue to affect several parts of the island.
The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) said the landslide warnings issued for 10 districts remain in effect, with Level 3 red evacuation warnings in place for areas considered to be at heightened risk.
NBRO Senior Scientist Hasali Hemasinghe said the evacuation warnings are in effect in Neluwa in Galle District; Walallawita in Kalutara District; Pasbage Korale in Kandy District; Mawanella, Deraniyagala, Aranayaka, Yatiyanthota and Dehiowita in Kegalle District; Nuwara Eliya, Kotmale East, Kotmale West and Ambagamuwa in Nuwara Eliya District; and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant, follow official instructions and evacuate if advised by authorities.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said 1,616 people from 458 families in 41 Divisional Secretariat divisions across 10 districts have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather.
An individual has died and another has been reported missing since September 18 due to weather-related incidents.
In Gampaha, strong winds that swept through the Biyagama area last night damaged five houses in the Galahitiyawa North Grama Niladhari Division. The electricity distribution network was also damaged.
A total of 94 people from 26 affected families are currently being accommodated at three safety centres.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has warned that although rainfall may ease somewhat during the daytime today, showers are expected to intensify during the evening and night.
Director of the Forecasting Division, Merrill Mendis said intermittent showers are expected in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western and North Western provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.
He said rainfall could increase further tomorrow and the following day based on current weather data.
Authorities have particularly urged people living in landslide-prone areas, low-lying areas and locations near river basins to remain alert and closely monitor weather and disaster warnings.
Meanwhile, water levels in several major rivers remain high, with minor flooding reported in some areas. Two spill gates at the Polgolla Reservoir and one spill gate at the Kukule Ganga Reservoir have also been opened due to the continuing rainfall.
