Steps are being taken to prohibit the sale of unpackaged coconut oil in the local market, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
The Acting Director General of the CAA, Samantha Karunasena made the announcement while appearing before a subcommittee of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises.
She said the move comes amid concerns over the adulteration of coconut oil available in the market.
Karunasena said a Gazette notification has been drafted in this regard and is expected to be issued in the future.
Under the proposed requirements, packaged coconut oil will have to carry essential labelling information, including the product name, weight, expiry date, batch number and manufacturer’s details.
She also said the CAA is working with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) to maintain the required quality standards for coconut oil available in the local market.
