Two arrested at BIA with 14,500 foreign cigarettes

Two persons have been arrested by the Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) attempting to smuggle in foreign cigarettes.

The two Sri Lankans, arriving from Singapore, had hidden 72 cartons and 10 packets of foreign cigarettes hidden in their travelling bags. Officials have found 14,500 sticks of cigarettes contained in them.

According to the customs officials the seized cigarettes are estimated be worth nearly Rs 725,000.

Reportedly, the suspects, aged 33 and 30, are revealed to be residents of Boralesgamuwa.

The stock of foreign cigarettes was declared forfeit while the two suspects were imposed a penalties of Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 by the Customs inquiry officer.
